1955 ... Disney and the Atom!

... Walt Disney was a great fan of Science and an advocate of the wonderful changes that modern technology might bring. One of the many science shows produced for television by the Disney Studios was 'Our Friend the Atom'. Not only was it shown repeatedly to a nationwide audience on the Disney TV show; but it was a shown in virtually all school classrooms in the 50's and 60's.

1951 ... we can nuke 'em too!

... in the post WW2 fight for military funding if you couldn't vaporize those pesky Commies with the atomic bomb you were out in the cold. The US Navy, still years away from it's fleet of missile firing submarines, was desperate. Those old style A-bombs were big and heavy and they needed big carrier based planes to lug them to the bad-guy targets. The AJ 'Savage' was just such a cumbersome brute.

1953 ... own your own reactor!

... in the early 1950's Nuclear Power was seen as a Genie that would transform the world. It was the exciting, sexy frontier of science. Who knew what miracles the Atom could perform? Forecasts were made for everything from atom powered cars to slightly radioactive walls that would light your house at night!
