1964 ... 'Habu'

... long - live the legendary SR-71 'Blackbird'. Also known as 'Habu'; a nasty venomous snake. Illustration by Adam Tooby.

... next year I plan on doing some of my own illustrations of the similar F-12C; because who wouldn't want a Blackbird that was built to shoot things down?!

... from 'Popular Mechanics'. The writing and illustration work of Frank Tinsley.
Old Frank never had any shortage of imagination; and doing both art and text gave him enough rope to go right over the edge!

1960 ... dogs of confusion!

1960 ... oily submarines!

... still amazes me how 'artistic' advertising was in the 1950's and early 60's.

1952 ... now in showrooms!

1957 ... call, wire or write!

1955 ... just in time for Christmas!

... can't figure out why they are so keen on expressing the fact "it's a pistol!".
Maybe they were figuring on a lot of Don Knotts type civil defense workers
being freaked out by atomic zombies? Then they could stand their ground
and warn "I've got a personnel and area accumulated radiation exposure measuring device.
Don't come a step closer!"

Note: this was the only ad in the otherwise
somber publication below.

1955 ... The Bulletin of Depressed Scientists!

... a little informative video about the clock and it's history.

1960 ... Project 'Iceworm'!

... in the end it didn't work because the ice kept moving and shifting.

1956 ... fill 'er up!

... a big deal about flying the B-58 was keeping all of that fuel balanced!

... Convair B-58 'Hustler' Strategic supersonic bomber

... nukes in Spaaaaace!

... ah -  the frivolity of the late 50's. We'd barely gotten into 'space' and we can't wait to turn it into an atomic battle ground! (But) the picture sure is cool! The caption said something about cowboys tending to their herd of nuclear warheads.
All I have to say is "... where in the hell is Major Kong?"

from the amazing collection of 'Mike Acs'

1957 ... managed by a midget!

... industrial ad people really liked the word 'midget'.

1952 ... had to build our own!

1955 ... Miss A-bomb!

... speaking of nuclear weapons and sexual obsession. Here we have a better than average print of 'Miss A-bomb' 1955 being crowned at a Vegas hotel pool. I have a hunch that any of the hotels could set you up with a model in 15 mins. who could be your 'Miss whatever'. I think Sarge up there may have been the sculptor. Women from that era with that particular look always remind me of someone's mom- yikes!

... that's not right!

...usually this Blog is strictly a 'G' rated affair. The end of the world should be fun the whole family can enjoy! But I just couldn't resist this charming bondage take on an old polyethylene radiation (dust) suit. Imagine what the neighbors think!

1960 ... ain't nothing but!

1952 ... never ordered!

... when I saw a B-36 on the tarmac at the Air Force Museum in the late 60's it was clear that here was technology pushed right up to, and a little beyond,  reasonable limits. The idea of sweeping the wings and putting all jets on it is a bit wacky!

1957 ... high, high, high!

... for all you Anglophiles; here's the whole movie! (it's a bit of a snorer)

1963 ... arms and arsenals.

(top to bottom) Atlas, Minuteman, Titan and Polaris.

1960 ... minding the future!

1955 ... a good guess?!

... not at all a good guess! Looks more like the captured German V2's Americans had been playing with as opposed to the Soyuz rocket the Russians were developing.

... meanwhile; down-under!

...being a professional photographer for most of my life, I can name two or three things that could go wrong to make this photo look so creepy. Not to mention a bunch of radiation!

... no, the Australians do not have nuclear weapons. England tested their nuclear weapons in Australia - which is largely uninhabited. (unlike the British Isles which are very populated!)

1957 ... brains needed!

1960 ... going 'crusin' with the Mace!

... before ICBM's were deployed , the US researched and deployed a limited number of early 'cruise' missiles. Shown here is the CGM-13 Mace; jet powered with rocket assisted launch from hardened above ground bunker.

... life in the trenches!

... you may loose your sanity - but it might save your life!

(Remember; depending on conditions, it may be safe to
go out for short periods after the first week of your two week
sheltering period. Consult your Geiger counter or
the local Conelrad radio station.)

1948 ... more dreams of flying aircraft carriers!

1955 ... Jetography?

1955 ... flying radar posts.

... even blimps and surface running submarines were used to plug the holes in the early days of radar vigilance. Atomic bombs were a quantum leap in technology that took other corners of science a long time to catch-up to and deal with.

1950 ... Protect Yourself !

... a little bit of ignorance can go a long way! Amazing how few people know or understand anything about the effects of a nuclear weapon. Not that it's a particularly relevant topic anymore- thankfully. But "kiss your ass goodbye" has become an arrogant reply for the cynical and anti-establishment- just as it was 69 years ago. Civil defense was neither foolish or just propaganda. The advice here is based on what scientists learned from the 2 atomic bombings of Japan. A great many casualties were from flash burns or flying glass. So surprise- your chances of getting wounded during a nuclear attack were (and are) much greater than a rapture style disintegration death.
