... in the post WW2 fight for military funding if you couldn't vaporize those pesky Commies with the atomic bomb you were out in the cold. The US Navy, still years away from it's fleet of missile firing submarines, was desperate. Those old style A-bombs were big and heavy and they needed big carrier based planes to lug them to the bad-guy targets. The AJ 'Savage' was just such a cumbersome brute.
