This was actually the first science fiction novel I remember reading. The first part of the book is a very claustrophobic world on the brink of nuclear war, New York City is virtually a ghost town as everyone who can leave has done so, convinced it will be the first atomic target of the Soviet Union. Everyone expects the bomb to drop at any time, there are blackouts at night to prevent enemy bombers from finding them. Then, the world discovers something even worse is about to happen and the cold war is suddenly moot...
