A guy I used to road-race cars with a decade ago was a Major in the US Air Force. He flew the Lightning in the UK during the 1970's as part of a pilot exchange program. He said it was the most "pilot-centered", "stick-and-rudder" plane he ever flew, and he flew all kinds of fighters up until he retired in about 1990.
